A man brutally stabbed his housemate 34 times after he mistakenly thought he’d broken his plate. Stephen Owusu, 23, confronted 42-year-old Thomas Murphy, before going to the kitchen and picking up a 20-inch knife before plunging it into his body.
Mr Murphy, a father-of-two, originally from Limerick, Ireland, was left with multiple stab wounds, 14 of which to his chest. Owusu, who has since been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, admitted an offence of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
At a sentencing hearing at Manchester Crown Court, he was today, October 24, handed a section 37 hospital order with section 41 restrictions. This means he will remain in hospital for treatment for his mental health disorder for an indefinite period and cannot be discharged unless the Secretary of State or a Tribunal deems it acceptable.

Prosecuting, Rob Hall outlined Owusu's long history of mental health issues and said his family had previously gone to his GP to seek help for his mental health issues.
“The defendant became suspicious that his parents were contacting his GP for him and disengaged from them,” the prosecutor said. “The defendant believed that he had deficient cognitive empathy and thought he must be on the autistic spectrum.
“He also told his GP that he experimented in online medicine and controlled drugs to improve his mental health, to no avail.”
