Ken Bruce admits he's 'really enjoying' life after his BBC Radio 2 departure earlier this year as he prepares for the PopMaster TV debut.
The Glasgow radio legend, 72, will be fronting his beloved radio quiz PopMaster on Channel 4 from next week. Ken had the idea that PopMaster could work for TV broadcasters and copyrighted the quiz himself, as the six-part series will come soon to More4.
However, Ken told Radio Times that he wasn't sure he would be the face of his beloved quiz if it ever made it to broadcasters. He reckoned “they would probably want some slick young 27-year-olds to do it”.
PopMaster has been a regular part of Ken's shows since the late 1990s, as it sees two callers go up against each other to test their knowledge of pop music.
“I'm really, really happy,” he told the publication. “Everybody's being super nice and letting me just be myself which is good, and open to suggestions that I make.”
He adds: “It still has the kind of relaxed, intimate feel of radio, so I think the contestants all seem very calm with the whole thing - as soon as we got through the first round, I thought, ‘This is going to work’.”
Speaking about the headlines and fanfare surrounding his exit from BBC Radio 2 this year, Ken admits he was shocked by the response. "I was slightly surprised by the interest, to start it was just 'old bloke leaves job', which is not news," Ken admits to new! magazine.
"So it's been lovely, actually and everything has happened at the same time.
"It feels right and I'm really enjoying it. I recommend that if anybody has the opportunity when they get to a certain age to just take a slight different direction in life then do it. Why not?"
In February it was announced that Ken would be swapping the BBC for Bauer
