Clayton Davis Jordan Peele is looking to push boundaries as a writer, director and producer every time he creates something new. “I’m going to keep trying to come up with original stories, and meet the expectations the audience has for me,” Peele says. “I hope to continue to lift original filmmakers up.” On this episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, we sit down with Academy Award winner Peele to discuss his two feature film projects in the awards conversation: the sci-fi horror film “Nope,” which he wrote and directed, and the animated feature “Wendell & Wild,” which he voiced, co-wrote and produced. Also on the episode, he talks about his long friendship and collaboration with Keegan-Michael Key, and whether fans might ever see the comedy duo reboot their beloved Comedy Central and Emmy-winning sketch series “Key & Peele.”

Comedy institution The Second City plans to open its first venture in New York City in Summer 2023. Located in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, the planned 11,900 square-foot entertainment space will feature a newly built mainstage theater, seven classrooms, and a full service restaurant and bar.

In December, the company did something few of its competitors could do: It struck a deal with Google to have three different late-night hosts weave a promotional message about the search-engine giant into their programs. On the night of December 15, Stephen Colbert, James Corden and Trevor Noah all nodded to Google during CBS’ “Late Show” and “Late Late Show” and Comedy Central’s “Daily Show.” The ad deal represented a vote of confidence in a sturdy portfolio of late-night programs that spanned broadcast and cable. Now, a good chunk of the talent in that collection is gearing up to move.

Naturally, this leads to some awkward clashing between Gordon and Hannah, as they have different creative approaches to this reboot project. Shows that attempt to be meta can sometimes get too inside baseball with showbiz references, but “Reboot” is clever and funny, for the most part.

The former global head of media and education for Sesame Workshop joins the company to drive strategic growth in areas including content creation, distribution and consumer products. It’s a no-brainer for the incubator to comedy all-stars like Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Chris Farley, Tim Meadows, Amy Poehler, Jason Sudeikis, Eugene Levy and Keegan-Michael Key.  At Sesame, where Wells also served as executive vice president, he oversaw an aggressive international expansion for all things Elmo and Big Bird.

It must be tough to work with Jordan Peele – not because he seems a particularly difficult collaborator (quite the opposite, frankly), but because lazy and/or SEO-hunting websites tend to ascribe his ownership to just about anything he touches. We saw it with last year’s “Candyman” (which he co-wrote and produced but did not direct), with Spike Lee’s “BlackKklansman” (producer), with the recent “Honk For Jesus.
