Kate Winslet revisited what many would consider one of the most romantic scenes in the history of cinema and described it as “a nightmare.”
The scene in question is from Titanic in which she and Leonardo DiCaprio share a kiss while standing at the front of the boat.
In a new interview, Kate watched the iconic footage back and explained why it was so challenging to film and what she recalled of it. She added that kissing her costar was “not all it’s cracked up to be.”

While watching the scene back for Vanity Fair, Kate explained that it was challenging as director James Cameron wanted the perfect lighting.
Additionally, it was filmed on a part of the set that was difficult to access. As a result, the hair and makeup teams weren’t with them. That left Kate in charge of fixing up their glam between takes.
Pointing at her dress, she said, “I have gotten hidden in here and here, I’ve got his makeup and brushes and sponge and my makeup and brushes and sponge in the other side.”
“Between takes, I was basically redoing our makeup,” Kate recalled, adding that Leonardo actually had a lot on to look tanner.
The scene, particularly the kiss, took multiple takes to get exactly right, and it was “such a mess.”
“We kept doing this kiss, and I’ve got a lot of pale makeup on and I would have to do our makeup checks — on both of us, between takes — and I would end up looking as though I’d been sucking a caramel chocolate bar after each take because his makeup would come off on me,” she said.
Leonardo faced a similar fate as her much paler makeup covered his face.
Regarding the kiss, she joked that her costar was “quite the romancer.”
