The Prince and Princess of Wales' relationship famously began at the Scottish university of St Andrews where the pair met as two young students as they took up residence in St Salvator's Hall.
Their on and off relationship lasted for nearly a decade before Prince William finally popped the question and proposed to Kate during a romantic trip to Kenya.
While there was widespread speculation about the strength of their relationship for many years, the couple were officially engaged on October 20, 2010 but they would leave the rest of the world waiting for another month to hear the news.
According to royal expert Katie Nicholl the proposal was very romantic as the couple travelled around the country before making a trip to Lake Rutundu where William had planned to get down on one knee.
He had organised a log cabin for their stay and the couple spent the day fishing unsuccessfully for rainbow trout, the Mirror reports.
The Princess of Wales previously revealed that when they returned home, William brought Kate out onto the veranda and asked her to marry him.
The future King and Queen checked out the following morning but both left sweet notes in the lodges' guestbook.
Their kind words which have recently resurfaced hint at just how romantic and special the holiday would have been for the pair of them.
Kate wrote: "Thank you for such a wonderful 24 hours!
“Sadly no fish to be found but we had fun trying. I love the warm fires and candlelights—so romantic. Hope to be back soon."
William wrote: "20th-21st October 2010. Such fun to be back! Brought more clothes this time! Looked after so well. Thank you guys! Look forward to next time, soon I hope."
