The Princess of Wales's love for tennis is well-documented and obvious each year when she enthusiastically attends Wimbledon as patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. While Kate, who recently appeared at Trooping the Colour, is not expected to visit the famed tournament this year due to her treatment for cancer, other members of the Royal Family and the Middleton clan are regular faces in the Royal box who have also been seen getting absorbed in the games.
Kate's father, known sports enthusiast Michael Middleton, had an awkward encounter that left Kate "mortified" - a tale she revealed in the 2017 BBC documentary Our Wimbledon hosted by Sue Barker. Kate recalled how her dad attempted to stay cool when they crossed paths with former British number one tennis player Tim Henman, saying: "My father is not going to appreciate this, but we were walking past Tim Henman and we had just seen [Pete] Sampras play," reports the Mirror.
"My dad said very coolly: 'Hi Pete'. I was mortified!" Outside of Centre Court, Kate has shown off her own impressive racket skills many times, including in 2021 where she paired up with tennis darling Emma Raducanu, 20, for a match at the LTA's National Tennis Centre for The Homecoming in honour of the star's US Open achievement.
During a 2018 visit to Bond Primary School in South West London, Kate, who was expecting Prince Louis at the time, joined young students for Wimbledon Junior Tennis Initiative training sessions. Opening up about her love of tennis to the kids, she confessed: "I love tennis, I think it's a great sport, I was really sporty when I was little, less so now that I've got lots of babies! But keep it up, it's great to be active, as everyone's been saying here
