The Princess of Wales has expressed her regret at being unable to attend a significant rehearsal for Trooping the Colour today, June 8.
In her role as Colonel of the Irish Guards, Kate Middleton would traditionally be present at the Colonel's Review, a traditional rehearsal held in preparation for the principal Trooping the Colour event set for next week. This year, it is the Irish Guards who will troop their colour.
However, due to ongoing recovery following her cancer diagnosis and treatment, Kate will not be in attendance at today's proceedings to give the salute. Her place will be taken by Lieutenant General James Bucknall.
Despite her absence, the princess took the step of penning a letter to the Irish Guards, expressing her pride in the regiment and extending her best wishes for their rehearsal, the Mirror reports.
The handwritten letter, printed on Kensington Palace stationery and made public through the Irish Guards' X account, read: "I wanted to write to let you know how proud I am of the entire regiment ahead of the Colonel's Review and Trooping the Colour. I appreciate everyone Trooping this year has been practising for months, and dedicating many hours to ensure their uniforms and drill are immaculate.
"Being your Colonel remains a great honour, and I am very sorry that I am unable to take the salute at this year's Colonel Review. Please pass my apologies to the whole Regiment, however, I do hope I can represent you all again soon. Please send my very best wishes and good luck to all involved."
Kate Middleton concludes her letter with the handwritten motto of the Irish Guards, Quis Separabit, translating to 'Who shall separate us?' and signs it off as 'Colonel Catherine'.
