Deciding on a name for any new royal baby is a very important task, particularly so if that youngster is one day destined to be King or Queen.
Almost every royal name has at least one, if not more, links to previous royals and it's important that there are no overriding historical associations which will impact their future.
For example, the names of William, George, Henry and Elizabeth all linked back to royal family members that came before them.
However, in recent years, younger members of the family have been given more modern names such as Savannah, Archie, Isla and Lucas.
Prince George's name is a classic however and is very fitting for a future king as it pays tribute to a number of famous royals.
However, the unexpected member of his family who actually made the final call on his name will come as a surprise to many.
Prince William and Kate Middleton's first born child, Prince George Alexander Louis was born on July 22 2013 as the future King of England.
The now 10-year-old prince was the latest in a long line of royals to be born at St Mary's Hospital in West London, joining the likes of his father Prince William and uncle Prince Harry.
When his name was announced a few days after his birth, many bet-makers rejoiced as George was the favourite to win at 10-1 with the moniker having many strong royal ties throughout history.
George has been the name of six kings, including the late Queen’s father, King George VI.
His first middle name is Alexander, which is the male version of the former monarch's middle name, Alexandra.
The prince's second middle name, Louis, was chosen to honour Lord Louis Mountbatten, Prince Philip's uncle who was murdered by the IRA in 1979.
The name is also carried by King Charles, Prince William
