Jonathan Cohen A decade after she had to convince her label that her choice of a first single wasn’t far too depressing and slow — and despite a baffling, ongoing lack of support from radio (country or otherwise) since — Kacey Musgraves has become a superstar capable of selling out arenas by simply being her sweet, weird and quirky self. The 33-year-old singer/songwriter’s open-hearted invitation to always “follow your arrow” helped her draw a remarkably diverse crowd on Feb. 5 to New York’s Madison Square Garden: groups of 30-something women in pink cowboy hats and winter-defying club attire, gay couples holding hands and singing along with every word and regular middle-aged folks who connect deeply with Musgraves’ soul-baring chronicles of love and relationships.
The audience received special light-up bracelets that changed colors from song to song, adding a further element of “we’re all in this together” camaraderie to the 90-minute set. Musgraves’ fourth and latest album, “Star-Crossed,” is a musical journey through her marriage to and eventual divorce from fellow musician Ruston Kelly.
On record, this triptych is artfully rendered and articulated, but should probably come with a warning label for those with wounded hearts. Luckily, any reservations about how the material would translate in an arena setting were quickly dashed on “Good Wife” and “Cherry Blossom,” with Musgraves’ undeniable pop hooks soothing the conundrums of incompatibility and fickle partners.

Jem Aswad Senior Music EditorThe transition from bedroom pop to one of New York’s biggest stages is not an easy one — the intimate sound and emotions of the loosely defined style are almost the polar opposite of the big gestures and loud volume it takes to fill a major venue. Yet two of the genre’s most popular (and youngest) artists, Clairo and Arlo Parks, did it with ease Thursday night before an impressively full crowd at New York’s historic, 6,000-capacity Radio City Music Hall.Parks, 21 — who is nominated for two 2022 Grammys — is already a major star in her native England and is the more animated performer of the two, although Thursday’s show represented a big step up from her last area performance (at the 650-capacity Music Hall of Williamsburg in September).
Rebecca Rubin Film and Media ReporterWatching Elton John perform at Madison Square Garden always feels historic; although though he’s performed there more than 70 times, he frequently says it’s his favorite stage on Earth.Even more historic is the feeling of watching him play what he says will be his last show ever at the iconic venue. (Then again, this is a man whose 300-stop worldwide farewell tour began in 2018 and, due to COVID-19, may be going on considerably longer than the 74-year-old originally planned.)“This is definitely the most magical venue to play in the world,” an emotional John told the New York City crowd on an unseasonably warm Wednesday evening.
Jordan Moreau Cordae helped heat up a frigid New York City on Sunday night with a blend of fiery bars and slow-cooked jams delivered to a packed room at Webster Hall. The 24-year-old rapper is currently in the middle of an international tour for “From a Birds Eye View,” his second studio release and first after the doubly Grammy-nominated “The Lost Boy.” Despite his youth and the ongoing pandemic, the Gen-Z favorite drew a sold-out crowd of mostly high-schoolers and twenty-somethings ready to vibe out to feel-good songs like “Want From Me” and “C Carter,” and to jump around to pumped-up hits like “Broke as Fuck” and “Have Mercy.”Cordae has been building a following for years, first as a member of the rap group YBN and more recently as a solo artist. Though he made some hits alongside founders YBN Nahmir and YBN Almighty Jay, Cordae always seemed destined for more.

Madison Chock and Evan Bates made headlines over the past week with their exciting and dramatic performance during the Team Figure Skating Event at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, and they’re about to take the ice again for the Rhythm Ice Dance competition today (February 12).
Morgan Wallen played to a packed crowd at New York City’s Madison Square Garden where the crowd routinely broke into anti-President Joe Biden chants. Videos from the event taken by Fox News Digital show the crowd enjoying the show and engaging in some political mockery while the artist was between songs during his set. One video shows everyone gleefully chanting "Let’s Go Brandon," a not-so-subtle code among President Biden’s critics that stands for "F--- Joe Biden." During Wallen’s opening act at the show for his "The Dangerous Tour" was special guest HARDY, who took a moment during his set to discuss what was going on in the country, prompting the crowd to launch into a "USA" chant as well.
Chris Willman Music WriterNot many bands can claim they’re having the best year of their career exactly 50 years into their run. All right — not any bands can make such a claim, historically, except for Sparks, which saw its star rise dramatically in 2021 due not to any recording or touring activity but as film creators and stars, with “Annette” and “The Sparks Brothers,” respectively.

Jonathan Cohen On the basis of his solo show at New York’s Beacon Theater on Friday night, Eddie Vedder hasn’t lost his sense of spontaneity. Since last May, the Pearl Jam frontman unexpectedly recorded an album with a new group of musicians and is now on the road with them for his first performances in indoor venues since July 2018.“We had some difficult times getting here, and if you feel the same, now is all that we have worked for,” he told the crowd during the second of two sold-out shows to start the three-week run.For some, it may seem a bit strange seeing an Eddie Vedder-led rock show without his Pearl Jam bandmates.

William Earl It’s been more than two decades since Björk’s once-maligned, now-revered Marjan Pejoski “swan dress” became the talk of the 73rd Academy Awards red carpet, and since then her way-left-of-center proclivities have become more and more commonplace. Kanye West wearing a mask while performing the seismic Yeezus Tour? Lady Gaga’s meat outfit? Katy Perry’s singing, phallic mushrooms during her Vegas residency and latest “SNL” performance? All seem directly sprung from the Icelandic singer’s performance art universe.
