Ask any Gen X or millennial woman——and she most definitely has a Judy Blume story. With the massive success of book-to-film adaptations like Harry Potter, Twilight, and Fifty Shades of Grey, you’d think that Blume’s fandom and body of work would have contributed to a full Netflix page just for her. And while IMDB shows that a few of her books have been adapted for TV and film, nothing has felt large, buzzy, substantive—or, quite frankly, worthy of Blume’s words, until now. After decades of vehemently turning down every big offer that came her way to adapt Margaret for the big screen, the time has finally come: 53 years after its initial publication, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, this Friday. When I ask if Blume could’ve ever guessed the 160-page novel with chants like “We must! We must! We must increase our bust!” would have such staying power, she laughs.
“Are you kidding? I didn’t even know if it would be published!” she says over Zoom from her home in Key West, Florida, where she lives with her husband of 35 years, George Cooper. The two founded Key West’s independent bookstore Books & Books, and can often be found there offering recommendations to shoppers.
