But Johnstone Burgh manager Jamie McKim is glad the former Rangers forward wasn’t ruled out for the rest of the season as he first feared.
The Northern Ireland star enjoyed a dream debut for the Keanie Park club last month – netting a brace in a 4-0 derby demolition of neighbours Renfrew.
The 35-year-old then suffered a knee injury in his next game, a 2-1 win against Drumchapel United, with McKim fearing he could have ruled out for the rest of the campaign.
Thankfully for the Burgh boss, he only has to plan for life without the forward for four to six weeks – depending on the forward’s speed of recovery.
That is still a bitter pill to swallow, though, for WoSFL First Division title-hunting Burgh who face top-of-the-table Shotts Bon Accord this weekend.
McKim said: “Lafferty injured his knee against Drumchapel. It’s a huge blow because you want your best players fit and available. Thankfully, he doesn’t need an operation.
“When it first happened I feared the worst but now we’re hopeful he’ll only be out for four to six weeks, depending on his recovery time.
“He’s already shown what a big player he can be for us and hopefully it won’t be too long until he’s back available again.”
McKim admits he would have been furious to have not picked up at least a point against Whitletts Victoria on Saturday.
But he was still hugely disappointed to not claim all three as the Keanie Park club suffered their first hiccup in their title tilt.
Burgh, who handed a league debut to Graham Dorrans, raced into the lead as Ryan Wallace headed home to break the deadlock.
