John Stones could sit out upcoming Premier League games against Tottenham and Aston Villa despite returning to the Manchester City squad against Liverpool.
Stones has barely played for City this season after suffering a string of recurring hip injuries that have sidelined him for months. There were initial fears after his injury against Young Boys in early November that he could be facing a long lay-off, although the England international surprised many by returning before the month was out.
However, he was an unused substitute on Saturday and Pep Guardiola stressed after the game that City do not want to rush him back. While he will continue to train with the team, Manu Akanji may find himself in the Stones role for the next games.

"He feels good but we want to give him one or two weeks to have proper strength training sessions. John is so important for us, I like him playing when he’s completely ready," said Guardiola.
"He’s going to train, partially or complete, with us. His legs especially, to be sure that when he comes back he is stronger. And we then use him, we need him. I’m really pleased with Manu, in the way he plays in those positions.
"Yesterday we spent a lot of time telling him the way he has to move against Liverpool. Manu and Rodri? It was a masterpiece for them. The way they moved with the right tempo at the right moment, the way they contact with the wingers and break the lines. It was really good. Hats off to Manu.
