Dakota Johnson Just Showed Another Way to Break This Infamous Fashion ‘Rule’

, Dakota Johnson stepped out in a corporate chic (dare we saw Dark Academia?) version of the combo, proving that the trick to nailing these two colors is to play with materials.Wearing black and navy together has long been considered a fashion don't, but like mixing metals, if it's done with intention, no one really cares. Gomez made it work in an Oscar de la Renta gown that was matte navy with shiny silk black details, so the textures didn't compete. And Johnson is employing the same trick.

The Beach Boys and Director Frank Marshall on the Band’s Disney+ Doc: ‘We May Not Have Been Great Surfers, but We Sang About It Really Well’

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic If Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer on most Americans’ calendars, then it makes sense that the real tentpole kicking off tent season for a lot of people is not “Furiosa” or “Garfield” but “The Beach Boys,” a streaming documentary devoted to the least wintery group of all time. The Disney+ film, co-directed by music-doc stalwarts Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny, focuses on the first decade and a half, in the 1960s and ’70s, of the career of the rock band that still might rightfully be considered America’s greatest all-time group.

‘The Beach Boys’ Review: The New Documentary on Disney+ Captures Their Story Note for Dreamy Note

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic When you sit down to watch a documentary about the Beach Boys, you know what you want: to be immersed in the California dreamin’ of the group’s early surfin’-hit days, in the jaunty beauty of songs like “I Get Around” and “Help Me Rhonda,” and in the story of how Brian Wilson began to figure out a way to turn pop songs into miniature symphonies. You want to be immersed in the recording of “Pet Sounds,” in the Beach Boys’ rivalry with the Beatles, in the derailed masterpiece that was “Smile,” and in how Brian’s mental and emotional problems began to tear himself and the group apart.

Wang Chung Was Surprised to Learn John Mulaney Used Their 1985 Song as His Netflix L.A. Talk Show Theme

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large Wang Chung had no idea John Mulaney’s six-episode Netflix talk show “Everybody’s in LA” would use their 1985 song “To Live and Die in L.A.” as its theme song — but they’re thrilled he did. “It’s a total surprise that it’s blown up in the way that it has,” says Wang Chung lead singer Jack Hues, who first heard of the usage on “Everybody’s in LA” via “the guy who does our merch.” For guitarist Nick Feldman, the other half of the duo, he was already a big Mulaney fan when he got the news that “To Live and Die in L.A.” was suddenly getting a new breath of life on Netflix. “It’s so nice to see it get used in such a cool way,” he says.
