A jealous thug tried to smother his partner with a pillow before dowsing her in a cold bath during a sickening attack.
Alexander Scoular launched the sustained assault against the woman after suspecting she wanted a romantic relationship with a neighbour.
The 40-year-old punched her in the face and strangled her, leaving her convinced he was going to “kill her”.
The screaming victim managed to escape his clutches on one occasion by kicking him in the genitals.
Scoular appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Tuesday and admitted assaulting the woman to her injury and danger of her life, as well as possessing an offensive weapon.
Fiscal depute Rosie Cook said Scoular and the woman had been in a “on/off” relationship for several years.
Ms Cook said the accused suspected his partner of being “interested in another male” who lived nearby.
She said Scoular attended the victim’s home in the city’s Wester Hailes area while “intoxicated” and an argument ensued over her alleged romantic interest.
Scoular pushed the woman, who was wearing pyjamas, onto a bed and placed a pillow over face, the court heard.
Ms Cook said Scoular was “strangling” the victim and “making efforts to smother her” before she managed to escape by “kicking the accused in the genitals”.
Scoular told the woman she was a “waste of space” then seized hold of her throat and choking her, the court was told.
Ms Cook said the victim “pleaded with (Scoular) to let her go” and “believed that the accused was going to kill her”.
The prosecutor said Scoular punched the woman in the face, causing her nose to bleed, then forced her into a bath where she banged her head on a metal handle.
Scoular then put the cold water on, Ms Cook said.
