James Bond actor Daniel Craig has received the same honour bestowed on 007, after being awarded a CMG at Windsor Castle for services to film and theatre. Craig was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George – the same honour held by Ian Fleming’s iconic character – by the Princess Royal on Tuesday morning. A CMG is the honour often given to diplomats, and the fictional spy is described as holding it in both the films and the books.
The Royal Family’s official Instagram account shared a picture of the moment Princess Anne placed the award around Craig’s neck, with a tongue-in-cheek reference to the actor’s most famous role. ‘We’ve been expecting you… The Princess Royal presents Daniel Craig with The Order of St Michael and St George – the same honour held by his character James Bond – in recognition of his outstanding contribution to film and theatre,’ the caption read. The actor starred in the last five Bond films, first appearing in Casino Royale in 2006 and ending his run with No Time To Die in 2021.
This latest distinction adds to the list which was expanded ahead of his final performance as Bond when he was made an honorary commander in the Royal Navy in another tip of the hat to his most famous role, as it matches the military rank held by the spy. In October, he was also honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. While in character as 007, he made a famous appearance alongside the Queen in a sketch to mark the opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
