There are many ways to "do" Eurovision successfully, but the most obvious path to success is one many people actually overlook: just enter with a good song. Brooke Scullion - a former Top 3 finalist in The Voice UK's 2020 series - has thankfully chosen to follow this advice.
That's Rich, a break-up song inspired sonically by the likes of Blondie, Avril Lavigne and Paramore, is hoping to take Brooke all the way to Eurovision 2022 as Ireland's finalist. It's a confident song, both sonically and lyrically, which isn't interested in being anything else other than a good song from beginning to end.
"Eurovision wasn't immediately in my mind [for the song]," Brooke reveals to us. "Because it isn't the typical Eurovision song. The Eurovision fans are going to die. When was the last time you heard Ireland submit something as modern as fresh [as this]? I think it could really switch up the face of the competition."
And it's really not hard to see (or hear) why. That's Rich seems precision-timed to cash in on the current rise in rock music on the Official Charts, helped in large part by female singer-songwriter acts like Olivia Rodrigo who riff on the likes of Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers and Fiona Apple.
According to Brooke, however, That's Rich organically came to life before the explosion of tracks like Good 4 U, and it's been a conscious decision to hold the track back from being released until the perfect moment.
"I wrote this in Christmas [2020]," Brooke shares. "And then the Olivia Rodrigo album came out, and it was probably not the right time to release it. We had to wait for Eurovision to do it for the gays!"
As she should. That's Rich also helpfully arrives in the year after Måneskin's victory at Eurovision last year
