Read more - Meet Interior Design Masters' Brummie contestants Abi and Richard In her day job, 28-year-old Abi turns junk into funky homeware accessories - including old furniture she finds dumped in the street. BirminghamLive talked to the Interior Design Masters star about the BBC One show, charity shop shopping, and her work transforming tat into treasure. Abi describes her work as "luxecycling" more than interior design.
In basic terms, it means reinventing and adding value to an unwanted or pre-loved piece of furniture by turning into something more desirable. Some of Abi's most popular work projects involve turning dog statues from charity shops into lamps, clothes shop mannequins into vases and printing Dolly Parton's face onto old dinner plates. She has her own Etsy shop, where she also sells a range of cross-stitch prints, featuring phrases from the likes of Cardi B's song WAP.
"I upcycle anything and everything I can find," said Abi. "I recently did a sofa that I found dumped by the bins by my house. "I call myself a creative chameleon.
If I see something, I'll say 'right I know what I'm doing with that, I have to have it' and people seem to really love what I do. "Abi launched her own business after losing her job when the pandemic hit. She said she has been upcycling since she was a child, and fondly remembers trips to the charity shop with her mum.
"I've always been into upcycling, that comes from my mum," said Abi, who is from Solihull but now lives in central London. "We would get things from charity shops and repaint them or make things out of them. "Throughout uni, I'd collect stuff from the side of the road and take it home and repaint it and put it in my room.
