Charles Yu’s “Interior Chinatown” is headed to the small screen as a 10-part series with the author acting as showrunner and executive producer alongside Taika Waititi, who will direct the pilot episode for Hulu.“Silicon Valley” and “Crazy Rich Asians” actor Jimmy O. Yang is set to star.
Winner of the 2020 National Book Award for Fiction, “Interior Chinatown” tells the story of Willis Wu (Yang), an extra on a procedural cop show called “Black & White” who dreams of rising through the ranks to become a leading man. When he witnesses a crime, Willis begins to look deeper into a criminal web in Chinatown, uncovering secrets about the world and his family’s history in the process.The Hulu drama from 20th Television will also be executive produced by Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore, and Elsie Choi for Rideback; Jeff Skoll and Miura Kite for Participant; and Garrett Basch for Dive.Yang got his break in 2014 playing Jian Yang on HBO’s “Silicon Valley” and went on to appear in series like “Fresh Off The Boat” and “Space Force.” His recent credits include “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” Jo Koy’s “Easter Sunday,” and “Me Time” with Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg.
Coming up for Yang are “The Silk Road Rally,” “Eighty for Brady” with Sally Field, Jane Fonda and Rita Moreno, and animated feature “The Monkey King.”Academy Award-winner Waititi serves as writer and executive producer of Hulu’s “Reservation Dogs” and “What We Do in the Shadows.” The “Jojo Rabbit” and “Thor: Love and Thunder” writer-director has a number of projects in the works, including an untitled “Star Wars” film and soccer dramedy “Next Goal Wins.”Yang is repped by Artists First, CAA and SRDA. Netflix has announced that it will be launching a new game development studio which will be led by Overwatch executive producer, Chacko Sonny.During the TechCrunch Disrupt 2022 event yesterday (October 18), Netflix’s vice president of games Mike Verdu shared the news of the new California studio, which is currently unnamed (via VGC).“We are starting another organic new studio in Southern California, this time around Chacko Sonny, who oversaw production on God of War Ascension for Santa Monica and oversaw a portfolio of their games, and then was executive producer of a little game franchise called Overwatch,” Verdu said.“He could have gone anywhere, he could have raised money, he could have done anything and he chose to come here. We are building a team around him and looking to him to reinvent what games can be.”Chacko Sonny left Blizzard Entertainment in September 2021 in order “to take some time off.” He worked at the company for five years from 2016 but didn’t become an executive producer on the Overwatch franchise until 2018.

ZDF, MBC, France Télévisions and Hulu Japan have signed up as partners for the six-part series, shot in English and directed by Barbara Eder (“The Swarm,” “Barbarians,” “Cop Stories”). Doelger helms as executive producer and showrunner, alongside the executive producers Ute Leonhardt, Rafferty Thwaites, Jan Wünschmann and Robert Franke. Shooting takes place at various locations in Rome, Northern Italy, and Leipzig in Germany.
“House of the Dragon” executive producer Sara Hess is going to continue developing original projects for HBO. The network announced Friday that Hess, who is also a writer on the “Game of Thrones” prequel series, is extending her overall deal for another two years.

Variety first reported the series was in development in Oct. 2020. Jimmy O. Yang will star in the series as Willis Wu, described as “a background character stuck doing work in a police procedural called ‘Black & White’ who has no idea of his leading man status. When he inadvertently becomes a witness to a crime, Willis begins to unravel a criminal web in Chinatown, revealing certain family secrets and what it feels like to be in the spotlight.” Yang’s previous credits include “Love Hard,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Silicon Valley,” the latter of which he appeared in throughout its six-season run at HBO.
