Meghan Markle and Gloria Steinem struck up a friendship just a few years ago after the pair bonded over their respective advocacy work. Now, Gloria, a journalist and political activist, will award the Duchess with the 2023 Woman of Vision award in New York on Tuesday. The two women met when Harry and Meghan left their royal duties behind and moved to their new home in Montecito, California, in 2020.
Soon after the move, the pair started working together to make calls thanking voter-registration organisers, which Meghan proposed to Steinem. "Meg is herself, smart, authentic, funny, political. She came home to vote," Gloria told Access at the time.

"And said, 'Hello, I'm Meg,' and, 'Hello, I'm Gloria,' and, 'Are you going to vote?' That was her initiative. "In August 2020, the pair filmed a conversation about suffrage on the Makers Women Instagram account.
The two women discussed why it's crucial for young people to vote. In the clip, Meghan says: "People forget how hard women like you and so many others before you fought for us to just be where we are right now. "During the conversation, Gloria told Meghan: "Welcome home.
I'm so glad that you're home!" To which Meghan responded "Me too. For so many reasons" before going on to tell her new friend how much she looks up to her. The two women came together again after Roe v Wade was overturned in June 2022, with the US Supreme Court ruling that there is no constitutional right to abortion.
