During a recent game against Norway, England forward Beth Mead scored her fourth hattrick for her country. The footballing star, 27, hit the ball in the back of the net twice in the first half and once in the second making it her 18th goal under manager Sarina Wiegman in just 16 games. When she isn’t playing for her country, Beth plays for Arsenal, where she’s been since 2017 using her right foot to score many memorable goals for her team.
While she’s been in the limelight for her time on the pitch, we take a look at what she gets up to off it and how she made her mark… Beth was born in Hinderwell, a village she describes as being “literally in the middle of nowhere in North Yorkshire”. Her career began when her mum dropped her off to a local football team as a youngster and despite the coach telling her she would be the only girl and it would be “rough”, she loved it.
She recalls: “My mum replied: ‘She’ll be fine’, because she just wanted to get rid of me I reckon. But when she came back an hour later, he basically said I was rougher than most of the boys!” That took Beth to Middlesbrough, where she played for both California Boys and California Girls before eventually joining Middlesbrough’s Centre of Excellence at the age of ten.
She eventually wound up at Arsenal where she met now ex girlfriend Daniëlle van de Donk. The pair were previously in a relationship but, despite splitting, show that they have no hard feelings for each other and still have snaps of each other in their Instagram pages. She previously spoke about their relationship: “I think if players like me and Daniëlle can make people feel more comfortable and proud of who they are, then that’s a good thing”.
