There has been great news for Call the Midwife fans as the smash-hit BBC One series recently returned for its mammoth eleventh series. And viewers will undoubtedly be familiar with Laura Main, who has taken on the role of Sister Bernadette, otherwise known as Shelagh Turner. in the East End drama since its debut.
Having marked a decade on the series, it's evident that Laura is best known for her acting work on Call the Midwife. However, the 40 year old actress has also appeared in several other critically acclaimed television series and stage musicals that have only strengthened her career. Here, OK! takes a look at Laura's impressive professional career and her personal life.
Scottish actress Laura landed the role of Sister Bernadette, a nun and midwife, in 2012. In the second series, her character questioned her vocation and, after recovering from tuberculosis, she decided to leave the order of St Raymond Nonnatus in order to marry Dr Turner, played by Stephen McGann. Speaking about the new series, the star said Call the Midwife was "groundbreaking".
"It has lots of women in it.There are one or two men around, but it is about a bunch of women and, more importantly, a bunch of women who get on with each other, who are supportive and collaborate with each other," she said in the BBC press interview. Prior to her life-changing role, Laura appeared in BBC drama Holby City as Julia Mason in 2007 before playing Deirdre Hunter in 2011. In recent years, she has also starred in other medical dramas, including BBC One drama Doctors as Kate Wilkinson in 2016.
