Indie Film’s Breakout Year: Good Movies Gain Traction Amid Strikes & Superhero Fatigue

The Sundance Film Festival is underway in snowy Park City, and Deadline is on the ground to watch all of the key films. Here is a compilation of our reviews from the fest, which last year saw A.V. Rockwell’s A Thousand and One win U.S. Dramatic Competition prize. Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project and Beyond Utopia took the top documentary awards, and both went on to make the Oscar shortlist.

Brent Lang Executive Editor Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, has acquired North American rights to “What You Wish For,” a new suspense-horror film written and directed by Nicholas Tomnay. The film stars Nick Stahl (Showtime’s “Let the Right One In”) and had its world premiere at Fantasia Festival. Tamsin Topolski (“Slow Horses”) and Randy Vasquez (“America Has Fallen: Election Day”) also star.

Lauryn Goodman has reportedly been caught up in a family feud amid rumours that Kyle Walker is the father of both her children. Former glamour model and TV personality Chloe Goodman is set to tie the knot with her footballer fiancé and long term partner Grant Hall next year.The couple already share two children together, Isla, three, and Hudson, one. However, it's not all happy families as Chloe's sister, Lauryn, has reportedly been uninvited from the wedding following the recent revelation that footballer Kyle Walker is the father of her second child. For some context, Kyle married his wife Annie Kilner in 2022 after the pair had been together for 12 years.They also welcomed three sons as a couple: Riaan, Roman and Reign.

Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” is on Netflix now, and obviously, it’s a divisive film with a 22% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Our review wasn’t pretty blunt about it, too, calling it “lifeless and superficial,” but it’s still fascinating that Netflix went all in on it, and a sequel, “Rebel Moon: The Scargiver,” is coming in April 2024 (read our review here; check out our 2024 blockbuster preview here).

For some awards season strategists — particularly the ones behind critically adored films like “Anatomy of a Fall” and “May December” — there’s no choice but to ask, “what happened?” The SAG Awards’ pearl anniversary brought expected mentions for Oscar contenders such as the two summer smash hits “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” leading the tally for all movies with four nominations each. In addition, the crime epic “Killers of the Flower Moon” and the satirical dramedy “American Fiction” managed three mentions.

The Directors Guild of America has nominated Barbie‘s Greta Gerwig, Oppenheimer‘s Christopher Nolan, Poor Things’ Yorgos Lanthimos, Killers of the Flower Moon’s Martin Scorsese and The Holdovers’ Alexander Payne for the top feature film prize at its 76th annual DGA Awards. See the full list below.

Leave it to Lucasfilm to throw us a curveball when it comes to “Star Wars” films. Just when we were all set to speculate about the three films currently in development, led by the next film being Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s feature starring Daisy Ridley, Lucasfilm has gone ahead and turned everyone upside down.

Jaden Thompson AARP The Magazine has announced the nominees for the annual Movies for Grownups (MFG) Awards. “Barbie,” “The Color Purple,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro” and “Oppenheimer” will contend for best picture/best movie for grownups.

Amid the flood of awards-season nominations comes AARP, whose Movies for Grownups Awards noms arrived today. Oppenheimer leads the way with six mentions, followed by Killers of the Flower Moon with five. Both will vie for Best Picture alongside Barbie, The Color Purple and Maestro.

Editor’s note: Underplayed in the media intrigue over the prospect of Warner Bros swallowing Shari Redstone’s empire that includes Paramount and CBS is the gloomy reality that another storied Hollywood studio could go the way of Fox. That went from a vibrant multi-faceted creative content-generating enterprise to a headstone, when Rupert Murdoch decided to cash out for Disney stock. David Zaslav spent 2023 kicking employees and finished films to the curb to pay down debt just to get this far; chances are more blood will spill down Melrose if Redstone sells some or all the pieces of Paramount to be mashed into an existing studio. When Bill Mechanic was perched atop Paramount, Disney and Fox, he built Disney’s home video from a $30 million to $3 billion business, and found ways to take risks and squeeze max returns from blockbusters from Braveheart to Titanic, Independence Day and many others. Who better to remind Hollywood that once a major studio dies, it never comes back, and that there might be better ways to squeeze better performance out of an established creative business with global pipelines?

It’s not controversial to say the “Star Wars” fandom has its fair share of toxicity, especially when it comes to misogyny and racism. Watching certain segments of the fandom lose their minds over the fact that a woman (Daisy Ridley) was the lead in the most recent films made was shocking and disturbing to watch.

An independent investigation by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) into changes made to the State Pension age is expected to conclude early this year. The Ombudsman recently confirmed any recommendations it makes to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), following the publication of its final report into ‘injustice caused by the maladministration’ of changes to the State Pension age, will be applied to “everyone who has been similarly affected” by the failings it identifies.
