Magnet Releasing Nabs Suspense-Horror Film ‘What You Wish For’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Tarot cards, much like the Ouija board, have always been used in horror films as some sort of sinister force. But when you see a tarot reading in person, you start to realize that it’s nothing more than a spiritual session between a couple of people, with very little horror.

Last week, Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke, the co-writer of Coen’s upcoming “Drive-Away Dolls” film, led a Master Class in conversation with critic Kaleem Aftab for the audience at the Tromos International Film Festival in Norway. And according to the Norwegian site Montages, near the end of the conversation,  Coen revealed that he and Joel have written a new script together (something that Coen already said a week ago).

Jaden Thompson In Season 2 of “Euphoria,” Sydney Sweeney‘s Cassie famously proclaims that she has “never, ever been happier.” It seems the same cannot be said for her new character Cecilia in the upcoming psychological horror film “Immaculate,” which is set to release in theaters March 22. Directed by Michael Mohan, Sweeney stars as a devoutly religious woman who moves into a haunted Italian convent in the countryside, which seems picturesque on the outside. The newly released trailer from Neon reveals that Cecilia will undoubtedly experience some “suffering” while dealing with a mysterious pregnancy.

Alex Ritman U.K.-based film production and distribution company Sovereign is expanding across the Atlantic with the launch of a distribution arm in the U.S. With a plan to release two to three titles a year theatrically and across VOD platforms, the first film slated for release from the new entity is Laurent Nègre’s World War II thriller “A Forgotten Man,” which Sovereign also produced. Set in 1945 after the surrender of Nazi Germany, the story follows the Swiss ambassador (played by Michael Neuenschwander) after he leaves Berlin, but finds himself haunted by his past.

Brent Lang Executive Editor Roadside Attractions has acquired North American rights to “Accidental Texan,” a comedy about a Harvard grad and actor stranded in the “Lone Star State” where he stumbles into the role of lifetime. The film, which stars Thomas Haden Church and Rudy Pankow, will open in theaters on March 8, 2024. According to the official plot description, “Accidental Texan” kicks off when Erwin (Pankow), a recent Ivy League student, flames out of his first professional acting gig when he forgets to turn off his phone and triggers an explosive nightmare on set.

Naman Ramachandran British actor Michelle Collins (“Coronation Street,” “Doctor Who”) headlines the cast of horror-thriller “The Haunting of Helen’s Bridge.” The film, directed by Stephen Presley (“Pandemic: the people, the conspiracy, the journey”) and written by Presley and Gemma Esau, recently completed principal photography. It explores the urban legend surrounding Helen’s Mountain and its infamous bridge, located at Asheville, North Carolina.

Naman Ramachandran U.K.-based sales and distribution company Blue Finch Films has boarded worldwide rights to horror film “Mom.” Blue Finch will be selling the film at Berlin’s European Film Market (EFM) in February. “Mom” will have its world premiere at FrightFest Glasgow in March. The film follows a struggling mother who is abandoned by her family and partner after a horrific incident.

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief ‘Exorcism Chronicles: The Beginning,’ a Korean-made animated horror film, has been added to the European Film Market slate of sales agent Finecut. The picture is derived from a novel and webtoon that are among the most successful in Korean history, about four individuals bestowed with special powers rooted in religion, the supernatural, and legend. The book sold 10 million copies and recorded 238 million views online. The film’s narrative is an origin story and recounts the first adventure of the foursome – an excommunicated priest, a young woman with telekinesis, a man who lost his sister to a malevolent spirit, and a child prodigy skilled in arcane magic.

Leo Barraclough International Features Editor Be For Films, an independent film sales company based in Brussels, has acquired international rights to German filmmaker Michael Fetter Nathansky‘s “Every You Every Me,” which has been selected in the Panorama section of the Berlinale. “Every You Every Me” won two Work-in-Progress Awards, under its previous title “Mannequins,” at the San Sebastian Film Festival.

Leo Barraclough International Features Editor September Film has acquired all rights for Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg for “In the Land of Brothers,” which has its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition section. The film is written and directed by Iranian filmmakers Raha Amirfazli and Alireza Ghasemi. Alpha Violet is handling world sales.

The film is directed by Maruthi Dasari, mostly known as just Maruthi, whose credits include horror-comedy “Prema Katha Chitram” (2013), romantic comedy “Mahanubhavudu” (2017) and comedy-drama “Prati Roju Pandage” (2019).
