'I'm so relieved - I nearly cried!': Manchester students pick up in-person exam results for first time

Many students across Greater Manchester picked up exam results today after 'some of the most difficult educational years that have ever been'.
In a mixed picture across the country the number of students achieving the top grades fell, but 19% more 18-year-olds were accepted into their first or insurance choice than in 2019.
This year marked a return to in-person exams following the coronavirus pandemic, which saw students receive results determined by teachers and based largely on their predicted grades and mock exams. The Manchester Evening News joined students at schools across Greater Manchester to celebrate their achievements and see what is in store next for them.

At Stockport Grammar, pupils were waiting anxiously for the school hall to open from around 7:45am, with results being released at 8am. But as soon as the doors opened, the smiles came thick and fast, with many students achieving exceptional results.
Thomas Emery and Enas Manaid Jamia both pursued sciences and were waiting to find out if they had secured their university places to study medicine at King's College London and Leeds respectively. Both got an incredible four A levels, all at A and A* grade - brilliant results which will see them both off to their first choice universities.
"It's a massive relief," Thomas told the M.E.N. "I only got one offer so it was really important for me to get this. I didn't feel nervous about it until I got here!"
Friends Tom Crouch and Charlie Hallows were also relieved to get the grades they both needed to get into their first choice university, Newcastle. Tom, who earned A*AB grades, and Charlie,
