Hulu has given a series order to Chad Powers, a half-hour comedy based on an Eli Manning sketch that aired on ESPN+.
Glen Powell (Anyone But You) will star in the series that follows a hotshot quarterback whose college career ends after bad behavior. He then disguises himself as the talented and affable Chad Powers, who walks onto a struggling Southern football team.
Co-creators and executive producers are Powell and Michael Waldron (Loki), who also wrote the pilot. It hails from 20th Television and will stream on Hulu.
“We’re both diehard college football fans,” said Powell and Waldron in a joint statement. “When we saw Eli as Chad Powers, we knew that was the way into a big, fun story about this world. We’re excited to be part of this team, and can’t wait to get Chad in the game. Think fast, run fast.”
The sketch from former NFL QB Manning was produced by NFL Films and Omaha Productions and aired as part of the Eli’s Places series.
Manning serves as executive producer along with Omaha Productions’ Peyton Manning, Jamie Horowitz, Ben Brown and ESPN.
Waldron and Adam Fasullo are producing for Anomaly Pictures while Powell is EPing under his production co-banner Brainstorm.
“The love for Chad Powers has surprised me in spectacular ways,” said Manning in a statement. “I played 16 years in the NFL, but now when I’m in a restaurant or walking through an airport, it’s not uncommon for fans to scream, ‘Hey Chad!’ I’m so excited to team up with my friends Glen Powell, Michael Waldron and Omaha Productions to continue to tell the Chad Powers story and see what he does next.”

Joe Otterson TV Reporter Margaret Qualley has been cast as Amanda Knox in an untitled limited series that has been ordered at Hulu, Variety has learned. Hulu has ordered eight one-hour episodes. The official description states that the show is “based on the true story of how Knox was wrongfully convicted for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher and her 16-year odyssey to set herself free.” KJ Steinberg (“This Is Us,” “Mistresses,” “Gossip Girl”) serves as writer and executive producer on the series.

Powell will star in the series in addition to co-creating and co-writing the pilot with Waldron, with both serving as executive producers. The show is based on the Chad Powers character created by Eli Manning for his EPSN+ docuseries “Eli’s Places.” Manning wanted to learn more about the walk-on process for college football, so he donned a wig and prosthetic makeup so he could go undercover during the Penn State football tryouts.
