This year’s Best Picture Oscar winner “CODA” is returning to theaters for a limited theatrical run beginning this Friday, Apple announced Wednesday. “CODA” will play on over 600 U.S.
After the dismal ratings of last year’s Oscar broadcast, a lot was in the balance for this year’s edition, one less severely curtailed by Covid protocols but with its own share of new worries and controversy. The decision to have the awards from eight categories (documentary short, film editing, makeup/hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short, live-action short, and sound) handed out at the beginning of the ceremony, before the event actually went live on television, was met with strong resistance from all corners of the industry.
CODA makes history at the 2022 Academy Awards. The film, which brings Deaf actors and the Deaf community to the forefront, secured the Oscar in the best picture category.
Owen Gleiberman Chief Film CriticSometimes, it comes down to one very simple thing — and by it, I don’t just mean the best picture race. The Apple Original film, which features a predominately Deaf cast, enjoyed a successful awards season all the way through Sunday night; Tony Katsur made history at the SAG awards after becoming the first Deaf nominee and winner to take home the prize for best supporting actor, going on to nab the same award at the Oscars. His win marks the second Deaf actor to ever land an acting Oscar, after his “Coda” co-star Marlee Matlin won in 1986.
After a long and predictably fraught journey, Oscar season finally came to an end tonight in a wild ceremony hosted by Regina Hall, Wanda Sikes, and Amy Schumer. In an effort to attract more viewers and make more time for “entertainment,” as Oscar producer Will Packer put it, the show cut eight categories from the main broadcast.

SAG Award for Best Ensemble and the PGA Award for Best Picture, both signifiers of potential Oscar glory to come.Awards aside, “CODA” from writer-director Sian Heder, resonates as a loving depiction of a deaf family and their hearing daughter (“CODA” stands for “child of deaf adults”), Ruby (Emilia Jones), who must navigate between her family duties and her desire to strike out on her own. Unlike “La Famille Bélier,” the 2014 film on which it’s based, all of “CODA”s deaf characters are portrayed by deaf actors.
CODA capped off the wild last hour of tonight’s Oscars with a history-making win for Best Picture, making Apple the first streaming winner in the top category.

(CNN)Halle Berry didn't believe she was going to win the best actress Academy Award in 2002 for her performance in "Monster's Ball.""Back in those days, if you didn't win the Globe, you really didn't get the Academy Award," Berry, who lost the Golden Globe to Sissy Spacek that year, recently told the New York Times. "So I'd pretty much resigned myself to believing, 'It's great to be here, but I'm not going to win.'"Now there is disbelief that she is still the only Black woman to win the best actress Oscar."It didn't open the door," Berry said.
“The Power of the Dog” has been the talk of Tinseltown ever since it debuted last fall, but to the masses it may still be something of an enigma. It’s the first film from Oscar-winning “The Piano” and “Bright Star” filmmaker Jane Campion in over a decade, and boasts Oscar-nominated performances from the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee.With the film poised to be a major presence at Sundays Oscars, you may be wondering what it’s about and where to watch it.
