Thanks to Love Island’s Millie Court and former TOWIE star Sam Faiers, acne is very much in the spotlight at the moment. Mille has spoken out about how she struggled with low self-esteem due to acne, detailing how it knocked her confidence. Gem Watson, 52 knows first-hand how acne and acne-scarring can affect your confidence, and indeed your life.
"I was diagnosed with a benign pituitary tumour in 2000 and, while it was non-cancerous, it released hormones into my bloodstream that caused cystic adult acne. It was incredibly painful and the acne made me feel so uncomfortable and self-conscious," she explained. Gemma stopped socialising for many years because of her acne, because she simply didn't want to go out and let people see her looking like she did.
"It got so bad that I couldn't even bear to look in the mirror," she admits. "It was only when I was finally prescribed antibiotics that it began to clear up but then I was left with the scarring which had a huge impact too and I still hid away. My confidence was in absolute tatters." "As the owner of an IT Business, my role was one that was very much customer facing.
I found that my acne scarring was impacting my confidence so much that it was directly damaging the business. "I was even apologising to my customers for the way that I looked - when of course, they’d never mentioned anything at all to me about my skin and, in hindsight, possibly not even noticed. But that was how self conscious I felt, it was crippling.
