Four tents appeared near the entrance of Salford’s town hall in apparent protest by homeless people. The tents appeared yesterday morning (Thursday December 21) as the city planning and transportation regulatory panel was taking place.
No-one was in the tents when the Local Democracy Reporting Service investigated. Salford city mayor Paul Dennett responded by saying: “Salford is responding to a national housing and homelessness crisis.
“In the last few weeks there have been significant increases in homelessness presentations and tragically people having no alternative, being forced to sleep ‘rough’ on our streets.” And he blamed delays in the implementation of the Renter’s Reform Bill for adding further ‘insult to injury’for holding up local housing allowance (LHA) increases, for making the problem worse.

He added: “To save lives and offer support over these winter months, Salford city council have no alternative but to consider options that aren’t ideal to help vulnerable residents in our city at this time, which is absolutely the right thing to be doing as we continue to demonstrate that the welfare of the people in the highest law.
“We are therefore temporarily opening an overnight welfare facility to provide some basic cold-weather cover. Existing support services off-site will also be available during the day.”
