The union reports that 90% of members cast ballots this weekend, with 98% of those votes in favor of strike authorization. The union’s negotiating committee will meet with representatives from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on Tuesday morning to resume negotiations.

IATSE and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have agreed to return to the bargaining table on Tuesday following the union’s historic strike-authorization vote. It will be the first time in more than two months that the two sides have engaged in collective bargaining.

It was announced this morning that IATSE members had voted by an overwhelming margin — 98% — to authorize their leadership to call a nationwide strike against film and TV productions. Reaction online was swift and nearly unanimously in support of the vote.

The Art Directors Guild, IATSE Local 800, is “wholeheartedly” urging its members to authorize a strike against film and TV production companies all across the country. The leadership of all three IATSE locals with national jurisdiction – the Art Directors Guild, the International Cinematographers Guild and the Editors Guild – have now gone on record recommending that their members authorize a strike in voting that begins on Friday.

IATSE president Matthew Loeb and the presidents 13 Hollywood locals, saying that “now is the time to change the culture of our work places,” issued a joint statement Tuesday urging members to authorize a nationwide strike against film and TV production companies.

Labor and studio sources tell TheWrap that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents studios in labor talks, quietly agreed with guilds weeks ago to extend the COVID safety protocols that have governed film and TV shoots over the past year through October 30.

The AFL-CIO’s Department for Professional Employees said today that it stands “united with IATSE” in its fight for a fair contract. IATSE members will begin voting to authorize a strike against film and television productions on Friday.

Hollywood’s Covid return-to-work protocols, which had been set to expire on Thursday — the day before IATSE members begin to vote to authorize a strike — have been extended to October 31, according to a management source. A union source, however, noted that only a “tacit agreement” to extend the protocols has been reached among the union signatories, and that no official announcement has been made yet.

The WGA East said today that it stands “shoulder to shoulder” with IATSE in its fight for a fair contract. IATSE is currently mobilizing to secure strike authorization from its members after contract talks with management’s AMPTP failed to reach a new agreement earlier this week. IATSE will begin holding a strike authorization vote among the members of its 13 West Coast studio locals on Oct. 1.

IATSE’s strike-authorization vote will be getting underway soon. Grips Local 80 said that it will hold its vote from October 1-3, and Prop Local 44 told its members at a virtual town hall Wednesday night that they’d be be voting on the same dates. IATSE has said that all 13 West Coast studio locals will hold their secret ballot votes “simultaneously.”

Leaders of the Editors Guild, IATSE Local 700, are urging their members to vote “overwhelmingly” to authorize a strike against the film and TV industry. The guild’s board, meeting on Tuesday, voted unanimously to recommend that members back the strike authorization after negotiations with the AMPTP for a new Basic Agreement broke down. The guild is one of three IATSE locals with national jurisdiction, and with more than 8,600 members, is its second largest local.
