People who failed to file their tax returns by the January 31 deadline are set to face big penalties from tomorrow, May 1, if they are still to pay HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) their due.
From the start of May, anyone who was supposed to file their tax return in January but didn't will face fines of £10 for every day that they do not tell the government about their income, on top of the £100 fine for missing the first deadline, this can quickly rack up to a maximum of £1000 for late-filers.

According to HMRC figures, close to 1.1 million people failed to file their tax on time in January and could be fined further for missing the late-filing deadline.

After six months, an additional £300 is slapped on, or five per cent of the tax owed, whichever is higher.
