The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will begin paying out £300 to struggling households on Tuesday (October 31).

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is set to pay out £300 to nearly a million households next month.
The cash will make up the second part of the Cost of Living payment, worth a total of £900. While HMRC is handing out the same Cost of Living payment as the Department for Work and Pensions, the payment date and qualifying benefits are slightly different.
Firstly, in order to receive a Cost of Living payment from HMRC, recipients must have received a payment from a qualifying Tax Credit from HMRC only between August 18, 2023 and September 17, 2023. Eligible Tax Credits include Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Pension Credit.

Secondly, the recipient must not have received a payment for another benefit from the DWP during the same period - this can include payments for Universal Credit and Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance. If this is the case, then the Cost of Living Payment will be handed out by the DWP instead.
The government also confirmed that those receiving the payment from HMRC will get it slightly later than those receiving the payment from the DWP. Payments for HMRC customers will be issued between November 10 and November 19. The payments will be automatic and tax-free, which means you don't need to apply if eligible and it won't have an effect on any benefits you receive at the same time.
