Taylor Kinney‘s Kelly Severide has officially left Firehouse 51.
Chicago Fire has revealed the reasoning behind Severide’s departure in the latest episode, which aired on Wednesday, March 1, on NBC.
Taylor announced he’d be taking a leave of absence from the series in January.

He actually left town to attend “the best arson investigation training program in the world.” Though he could have declined the last-minute opening, the opportunity was too good to miss.
Taylor wasn’t in the episode at all, as he actually already left the set when it was shot.
Instead, the news was delivered to Boden (Eamonn Walker) by the captain. Though the chief is disappointed, he believes that Severide’s training will be advantageous for the firehouse when he eventually returns.
Taylor has been a mainstay for the One Chicago franchise, and has appeared on all four series: Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago P.D., and event the short-lived Chicago Justice.
It’s unclear how or when Taylor will be back on the series at this time.

He left during the the fifth episode of Season 10, as the character moved to Oregon with a three-year commitment to a new job. At the time, he shared that he was walking away from the show since he’d been doing television for 18 years and wanted to take a step back and spend more time with his family. (He previously starred in the Australian soap “Neighbours” and portrayed Dr. Robert Chase on Fox’s “House.”)
