Gareth Davis was assaulted in an unprovoked attack on Boxing Day, 2022, while he was out with friends in Hull City Centre.
He was rushed to hospital after being punched by Liam Lovick, where he nearly died due to a life-changing brain injury, Hull Live reports.
His father, William David, is now supporting a campaign to raise awareness of alcohol-fuelled violence and the devastating consequences.
He described his son, known as "Garfy" to pals, as a "gentle giant" and said he will now have to spend the rest of his life in a care home.
William opened up about the devastating impact of the assault in a new film released by Humberside Police as part of their One Punch Ruins Lives campaign.
Speaking in the film, he described Gareth as a "gentle giant". He said: "People used to say, 'He's just a gentle giant'.
"He'd do anything for anybody. I mean, if somebody went up to him, especially a stranger, and said, 'Have you got a pound or two pound?' He'd just give it to them."
