A woman in hospital for heart surgery has claimed she was kept on a “dirty” ward and given “disgusting” meals.
Catherine Murphy took pictures of some of the food served up to her such as shepherd’s pie and macaroni cheese, which she described as “slop”. The 54-year-old said she had to order in her own meals and believes no heart patient should have been served the dishes offered at the hospital.
She said: “I have never seen food like it. It was disgusting. It cost me a fortune to get food brought in.”
Catherine, from Airdrie, had been taken in to the town’s Monklands Hospital and was there for six days before being transferred to Hairmyres, in East Kilbride, where she had a pacemaker fitted.
She added: “I was taken in to the acute medicine recovery unit at first and put in a room on my own which was dirty.”
Catherine, a mum of three, said there were “spit marks” in the glass on the door.
She added: “I wasn’t expecting the Ritz but I was expecting it to be clean.”
NHS Lanarkshire’s Judith Park, said: “Our menus try to incorporate dishes for everyone but unfortunately, we recognise what we offer does not suit every patient.”
Health Secretary Michael Matheson added: “We have taken a range of action to improve food standards in hospitals which health boards have to comply with.”
