People are more health conscious than ever these days and have a wealth of information at their fingertips to help keep them alive and kicking.
One route that many go down is taking supplements to ensure they are getting all required vitamins and minerals. From iron to vitamin C and joint-aiding glucosamine, there is no shortage of nourishing capsules out there.
But takers need to be careful about when supplements are consumed and how. Those on prescription medication risk health issues from mixing certain pills - which range from confusion to anxiety and even seizures.
While certain drinks can interfere with supplements, making them ultimately ineffective. For example, taking calcium and magnesium supplements will reduce each mineral's effectiveness.
With this in mind, The Healthy has shared the supplement combos that should be avoided. Here's what you should know, as reported by The Mirror.
If you take these two minerals at the same time it can reduce their effectiveness, says Tod Cooperman, MD, president of independent testing company consumerlab.com.
"Taking large amounts of minerals with other minerals will reduce absorption,” he says. Essentially, the minerals compete with one another - and both lose out.
This is why it's sensible to take any mineral supplements at least two hours apart.
Iron is vital for your energy as it helps distribute oxygen to cells, but you won't be able to absorb the mineral if you mix it with green tea, black tea, or curcumin supplements.
It’s perfectly fine to drink green tea beverages - just don’t wash down your iron supplements with it. Dr Cooperman advises to spread the two apart by a couple of hours.
You need to be mindful of a supplement reacting with any over-the-counter or prescription
