When you're trying to lose weight or become healthier, doing regular exercise and eating a balanced, nutritious diet is essential.
And depending on your work or family life schedule, you might find that exercising in the morning works better for you rather than doing it towards the end of the day.
It can be difficult to know whether you should be eating breakfast before a workout, or if you should just get up and do it, and eat afterwards. And it turns out there are benefits to doing both, one health expert recently revealed.
Professor Javier Gonzalez from the Department for Health appeared on a recent episode of the ZOE health podcast alongside ZOE co-founder and CEO, Dr Jonathan Wolf.
The pair were discussing exercising on an empty stomach and whether it is beneficial for weight loss or not, and how it affects our overall health.
There are benefits to lining our stomachs before a workout - as well as waiting until afterwards to eat breakfast.
When asked whether we should be eating breakfast before or after exercise, Javier explained: "I think there are some benefits to exercising after you've eaten. You can have an immediate beneficial effect on lowering those blood sugar peaks, but if we want to get some of the longer term improvements from exercise training, it can be useful to do at least some exercise before you have breakfast.
"That seems to improve some of the longer term benefits, including our insulin response, potentially fat burning, which may relate to other health outcomes, but not necessarily weight loss."
Also in the episode, Javier explained how exercising before breakfast can also have a positive impact on your insulin production.
