HBO and HBO Max surged past rival Netflix in this year’s overall Emmys tally, winning a dozen prizes tonight for a total of 37 spanning the Creative Arts and Primetime shows.
Netflix took home a total of 26 trophies, but just three tonight. The showings represent nearly the mirror opposite of 2021, when Netflix had 44 total Emmys, to HBO and HBO Max’s 19.
Here’s the full scorecard for multiple winners:
With multiple wins for limited series The White Lotus (which had 10 wins in all) and Succession, plus key pickups for shows like Euphoria, Hacks and Last Week Tonight, HBO/HBO Max dramatically extended the 25-to-23 lead it took into tonight. Netflix, by contrast, never achieved sustained momentum despite notable wins for Squid Game and Ozark.
The Korean-language Squid Game became an unlikely global smash and a feather in Netflix’s cap, attesting to its global footprint and unique ability to cross-pollinate across territories. Yet the company’s subdued Emmy showing — months after it netted just one Oscar win from a field-leading 27 nominations — is apt to stimulate more rounds of chatter about its statuette struggles. Outside of the awards realm, of course, 2022 has brought Netflix to a larger corporate crossroads. Although it continues to lead the streaming race with nearly 221 million global subscribers, the company has posted its first subscriber losses in more than a decade, prompting it to slash costs and lay off employees as execs have finally acknowledged the impact of competition in the U.S.
While HBO and its newer streaming sibling have had more creative mojo of late, their path has also had plenty of bumps. In 2022, as presenter Bowen Yang jokingly alluded to during the ceremony, it has made news by canceling a number

HBO Max, which just became part of Nielsen’s weekly U.S. streaming rankings a few weeks ago, had a coming-out party on the chart for August 22 to 28 thanks to House of the Dragon.
Joe Otterson TV Reporter Lukas Gage has joined the cast of the “Dead Boy Detectives” series at HBO Max, Variety has learned. The eight-episode series was ordered at HBO Max back in April. It is based on the DC comics of the same name as well as “The Sandman,” from characters created by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner. The official series description states, “It’s a fresh take on a ghost story that explores loss, grief, and death through the lens of Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), two dead British teenagers, and their very alive friend, Crystal Palace (Kassius Nelson). So, it’s a lot like a vintage detective series — only darker and on acid.”
House of the Dragon” ranked at No. 6 on the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 chart during the Aug. 22-28 viewing window. That time period was the first full week of availability for the first episode of the “Game of Thrones” prequel on HBO Max, but also included a small portion of the streaming viewership for Episode 2, which debuted on HBO Sunday, Aug. 28 at 9 p.m. ET. Together, the first two episodes of “House of the Dragon” garnered 741 million minutes viewed that week, more than doubling the prior week’s Nielsen streaming numbers, which only counted up viewership for the first few hours that the “House of the Dragon” premiere was available on HBO Max. (Nielsen cuts off its count for the SVOD weekly rankings on Sunday evenings). But in just that short measurement of time, the series quickly raked in 327 million minutes watched on the streaming service.

The series “Constantine” was being developed by British novelist Guy Bolton, and the series was intended to tie into the “Justice League Dark” universe of characters. The other property, “Madame X,” would also have fit into “Justice League Dark” and was in the works from writer Angela Robinson.
