Haunted Mansion director Justin Simien is trying to please two constituencies: the fans of the Disney theme park attraction, and those who remember the Eddie Murphy and director Rob Minkoff film adaptation.
Simien told EW he did a forensic examination of the Murphy film.
“I had a little bit of beef with the first film, because the first thing you’ve got to give the kids is the candy of the mansion that they know and love,” Simien said.
“Not to dunk on the movie. It’s a movie of its time, and it’s also a movie that, frankly, a lot of people grew up with and love hardcore. In theaters, I was a little too old for it, but what I appreciated was Rob Minkoff. He’s a genius. And I appreciated the elevation that they were going for. They had this beautiful book of all the production design, and I spent a lot of time walking through what their intentions were. I think a lot of that was interesting, but I also didn’t want to repeat any of it.”
Instead, Simien opted to create something totally different, albeit without disturbing fans of the Murphy film.
Simien’s Haunted Mansion star Rosario Dawson, a single mother brings in a team of paranormal specialists (LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilon, Tiffany Haddish) to contain the ghosts in her New Orleans home. Once again, characters from the ride make cameos, with Jamie Lee Curtis portraying Madame Leota and Jared Lto as the Hatbox Ghost.
Simien’s Haunted Mansion arrives in theaters July 28.

Joe Otterson TV Reporter The two-part “30 for 30” documentary on the seminal 1990s competition show “American Gladiators” has now concluded, wrapping up an epic saga that cut right to the core of the American Dream. The documentary dove deep into the largely unknown history of the show, which dominated the TV landscape in its initial run in syndication on US television and around the world. It revealed stories of love, lust, betrayal, friendship, injury, agony, and everything in between from the creators of the show and the Gladiators themselves. So how did a nearly three-hour doc about a show famous for events like jousting with things that looked like huge cotton swabs and rolling around in giant steel balls called Atlaspheres come together? According to the doc’s co-director Ben Berman, he was skeptical when initially approached by Vice about the project but changed his mind once he learned more about the story.

Her impassioned plea became instantly viral and has been dominating headlines in French media. After being introduced on stage by Jane Fonda and thanking her partners on the film and Cannes’ jury, Triet said the country “was rocked by an unprecedented protest movement that was extremely powerful and unanimous against the pensions reform.” She argued that the “protest was denied and suppressed in a shocking manner, and this pattern of increasingly uninhibited dominating power is now at work in several areas; obviously socially is where it is the most shocking, but we also see it in all spheres of society, and the film industry hasn’t been spared,” said Triet, drawing cheers and a few boos from the captive audience inside the Lumiere Theater.
Jane Fonda took a pretty dramatic step to make sure that director Justine Triet didn’t forget her Palm d’Or award at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
