A centuries-old Kirkcudbright institution is on a firmer footing after gaining several new members.
Fears had been expressed for the future of the 600-year-old Haill Six Incorporated Trades due to a drop-off in numbers and support at events.
Deacon Convener Ian D Swan had warned it was “unconceivable but realistic” that the present generation could be the last to uphold its ancient rituals.
However, Friday’s AGM saw a good turnout of deacons and journeymen in the Tolbooth Arts Centre – with five new members introduced and accepted.
Now plans are being laid for ways to encourage more people to be actively involved.
General Clerk Ian McIntyre said: “It is very encouraging that we have younger folk coming forward. But clearly we have to keep our foot on the gas.”
Kirkcudbright Rotary Club president Alan Ross, James Garbutt and David Bell are now members along with and James Cavendish and Tobias Parker from Buittle Castle.
Mr McIntyre said: “It would be great to get our wider membership more engaged. We are going to do a mail drop and go out on foot to deliver the envelopes – that’s the next part of our strategy.
“It’s up to us to engage folk. We are hoping this will act as a catalyst for more involvement and growth.”
Meanwhile, the Kirkin’ of the Deacon Convener takes place this Sunday, October 15. Members of the Trades will meet at 10.40am outside the old courthouse and proceed to the parish kirk.
The Trades date back to 1425 and the reign of James II.
