Green Day tease ‘Nimrod’ 25th anniversary celebrations

Avril Lavigne has dropped out of the final day of When We Were Young festival due to "unforeseen circumstances". The Complicated singer, who performed at the star-studded emo/punk festival in Las Vegas on Sunday, has withdrawn from the festival's third and final day on Saturday and been replaced by Death Cab for Cutie. "We are excited to share that Death Cab for Cutie and Underoath have been added to Sat's lineup," festival organisers tweeted on Tuesday night.

Car Seat Headrest has announced that he’s cancelled his upcoming US tour and performances at the When We Were Young festival due to health issues.The band, fronted by Will Toledo, were set to begin a tour tomorrow (October 20) in Pioneertown, California which was set to run for the next week and incorporate three sets at Las Vegas’ When We Were Young.Taking to Twitter, Toledo revealed that ongoing health issues have forced the cancellation of the tour. He wrote: “After another month of struggling to regain my health, I am currently forced to face the fact that my body lacks the basic levels of functionality necessary to leave the house most days, let alone embark on a tour.“As a result, we are unfortunately forced to pull out of the When We Were Young festival dates, and cancel our upcoming California tour.

Green Day have come good on their teaser from earlier this week, revealing an expansive deluxe edition of their fifth album, ‘Nimrod’ – dubbed ‘Nimrod XXV’ – alongside a previously unreleased demo from its recording sessions.The drop comes exactly 25 years since the band released ‘Nimrod’ – the follow-up to 1995’s ‘Insomniac’ (for which Green Day also released a quarter-centennial edition) first hit shelves on October 14, 1997. It spawned four singles: ‘Hitchin’ A Ride’, ‘Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)’, ‘Redundant’ and ‘Nice Guys Finished Last’.The original album sported 18 tracks (tying it with 2009’s ‘21st Century Breakdown’ as Green Day’s longest), but a Japanese edition featured a bonus song called ‘Desensitized’, while an Australian version also featured the demos ‘Suffocate’, ‘Do Da Da’ and ‘You Lied’.

The headliners mark a noticeable shift from emo (this year’s headliners are My Chemical Romance and Paramore) to pop-punk, with the lineup also featuring 30 Seconds to Mars, the Offspring, Good Charlotte, 5 Seconds of Summer, All Time Low, Pierce the Veil, Rise Against, Yellowcard, Sum 41, Simple Plan and New Found Glory. When We Were Young, which takes place at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds, has announced an Oct. 21, 2023 date, but considering this year’s edition added two extra dates after the first one sold out, it’s likely that next year will follow suit. Tickets are on presale starting Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. PT. When We Were Young’s website notes that those who signed up for the 2022 presale will automatically receive a 2023 presale code on Friday morning.

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic The question is no longer just what Bob Dylan will have to say about Elvis Costello’s “Pump It Up” or the Clash’s “London Calling” when he writes about them in his new book, “The Philosophy of Modern Song.” Now we can wonder how Helen Mirren or Renée Zellweger will sound giving voice to Dylan’s prose as they read those chapters, respectively, in the audiobook version, which, like the hardback, arrives Nov. 1. Variety previously reported the titles of the historical songs Dylan has written essays about for the tome, followed by the the names of the actors enlisted to read individual chapters for the audiobook, but those two lists hadn’t been paired up till now. A look at the list below, being revealed for the first time today, shows that all of the stars involved have been given multiple assignments, including Jeff Bridges, Oscar Isaac, Rita Moreno, Jeffrey Wright, Sissy Spacek, John Goodman, Alfre Woodard and Steve Buscemi as well as Mirren and Zellweger.
