The club announced the scheme on its website on March 4 ahead of the Manchester derby, informing fans that 'recycling pods' would be installed at the main entrances to the ground 'in partnership with Etihad Aiways', its main sponsor.
Supporters were urged to use the pods and then scan the adjacent QR code to earn 'Etihad Guest Miles and help make a difference to the planet'.

Jeff Gazzard, Manchester Airport Environmental Network spokesman, told the M.E.N: "This is complete nonsense, however well-meaning.
"I would give them eight out of ten for bringing plastic recycling to supporters but to reward it with with free air miles is hilariously wrong. What were they thinking? The answer is they weren't thinking.
"It makes no sense to make that effort to save the planet by recycling on one day and undo all your good work the next by stepping on an aircraft. It's madness."
