The Government has today confirmed plans for Eton College to launch a new sixth form in Oldham - and announced two new free schools will also open in Manchester. They are among 15 new free schools given the go-ahead in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the country.
Eton first floated the plans in March last year in a move designed to open up Oxbridge and other elite universities to the town's students. Oldham is one of three Eton-run sixth forms set to open. It's hoped it will begin taking pupils in 2025.

Meanwhile the government has also announced a new secondary school will open in Manchester and a new sixth form centre will open in Wythenshawe, both run by Dixons Academies.
Education Secretary Gillian Keegan said: "We want to make more good school places available to families, and these 15 new free schools will bring brand new opportunities to young people from Bradford to Bristol.
