Neil Gaiman fantasy series Good Omens is looking good to land a Season 3 renewal by Amazon and the BBC, I hear. In anticipation of the order for what will likely be the show’s last chapter, the options on the series’ main cast, led by Michael Sheen and David Tennant, have been picked up, sources said.
Not returning for Season 3 is Douglas Mackinnon, who served as executive producer, director and co-showrunner on the first two seasons.
Mackinnon revealed his departure from Good Omens on Instagram. Answering an ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike-related challenge to film/TV professionals to post a photo of themselves on the job, he ran an image from the set of the Prime Video/BBC Two series.
While he did not identify the production, fans recognized the set and started a Good Omens discussion in the comments section to which Mackinnon responded, “I’m not involved with this show anymore.”
Mackinnon’s statement created a frenzy, leading a fan to ask series creator Gaiman about the director’s status on the Bluesky platform. His answer: “Douglas has moved on to other projects.”
While the news of Mackinnon’s exit also raised concerns about Good Omens‘ future, Season 3 is very likely, I hear.
Season 2, which was released in August, is believed to have done well, with Prime Video touting it as #1 comedy on the platform worldwide following its debut.
That same month, Gaiman, responding to a fan question on X about hope for Season 3, wrote, “It’s planned and plotted and if there wasn’t a Writers Strike on I’d be writing it right now.”
Gaiman, who in addition to creating the TV series co-authored with Terry Pratchett the novel Good Omens was based on, has indicated that Season 3 would draw from the duo’s unfinished sequel to their

On the heels of the wonderful 2019 The Two Popes, in which Anthony Hopkins starred as Pope Benedict XVI in an imagined conversation with Jonathan Pryce’s future Pope Francis, Hopkins is once again involved in the same kind of cinematic historical fictional meeting as founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud, who is engaged in a private debate with The Chronicles of Narnia author and theologian C.S. Lewis (played by Matthew Goode) on the existence of God. As with The Two Popes, there is no proof whatsoever that any meeting ever took place, but it clearly provides lots of material to wrap your head around. That is exactly what Mark St. Germain did in creating his 2009 play Freud’s Last Session, which was built on the 1967 Harvard lectures of Dr. Armond M. Nicholi Jr in his presentation “The Question of God: C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud Debate God, Love, Sex, and the Meaning of Life.”
