Golden Globes nominate record number of female directors with Regina King, Emerald Fennell, and Chloé Zhao

Emerald Fennell, Regina King and Chloé Zhao all received nominations for their films Promising Young Woman, One Night in Miami, and Nomadland.

Golden Globes nominations have been revealed, and have left many film fans scratching their heads. This year’s list of nominees is a mixed bag, and while certain films and TV shows made the list as expected, a number of others were snubbed entirely.

Over 66,000 people have signed an online petition calling for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to pull two Golden Globe nominations for Sia's film, Music. The Chandelier hitmaker, who made her directorial debut with the musical drama, has come under fire for its portrayal of autism, with signers of the Change.

Regina King, who most recently stepped behind the camera for One Night in Miami, has set a new onscreen role, playing pioneering politician Shirley Chisholm. John Ridleywill write and direct Shirley, which will be produced by Participant.

Regina King is having a pretty great year and a half, isn’t she? Over her already-great career, she starred in numerous films and was already a household name, as an Oscar winner, when she landed the lead in “Watchmen.” However, the popularity of that show (and the awards recognition she received) opened her career up even more. And then you have her directorial debut, “One Night in Miami…” which is poised to make King an Oscar darling, only adding to her success.

For the first time in the history of the Golden Globe awards, more than one woman has been nominated in the best director category in any one year. Chloe Zhao (Nomadland), Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) and Regina King (One Night in Miami) were all nominated in the category.

This year’s Golden Globes took a leap forward in representation terms with women landing three of the five nods in its Best Director Motion Picture field.
