The number of police officers in Greater Manchester is poised to surpass 7,000 for the first time in eight years.

Some 6,943 cops are on GMP's payroll, an increase of 223 compared to the previous year, according to the latest figures.

Extra government cash means a further 321 police officers will be recruited in the next few months, many of them replacing experienced cops who left GMP to join neighbouring forces,
