‘Alien: Romulus’ Scares CinemaCon with Bloody, Bone-Cracking Footage of Creatures Shredding Human Chests

Matt Donnelly Senior Film Writer The venerable “Alien” franchise has nearly 10 films under its belt and, somehow, every time a space crew member’s chest bursts open and a horrifying little creature crawls out we’re still terrified. Such was the case on Thursday at CinemaCon, the annual convention of movie theater owners in Las Vegas, where Disney showed off an extended look at its latest entry “Alien: Romulus.” Directed by Fede Álvarez (“Don’t Breathe,” “Evil Dead”), the movie follows a group of solar explorers who stumble on an abandoned space station. Guess what’s on board? Cailee Spaeny leads a next-gen cast of unfortunate souls that must contend with creatures with fun names like facehuggers and Xenomorphs.

Aziz Ansari reveals why Keanu Reeves was hobbling on crutches while filming ‘Good Fortune’

Aziz Ansari revealed that his “Good Fortune” co-star Keanu Reeves was hobbling on crutches in January because he tripped on a rug in his trailer.Ansari, 41, elaborated on Reeves’ fractured kneecap injury at CinemaCon 2024 in Las Vegas on Wednesday.“About, I don’t know, 15 days into shooting with me, I was like, ‘Hey, just go chill in your dressing room for 15 minutes.’ And he tripped on a rug,” said Ansari, who co-wrote and co-directed the movie with Reeves.“He’s like, ‘Aah, my knee.”Ansari said that Reeves, 59, didn’t let his injury get in the way of filming, however.“He still filmed everything except some scenes where we needed him to do salsa dancing, which we need to pick up.“He was like, ‘I’ll do it!’ We’re like, ‘Keanu, calm down. We’ll do the salsa dancing once your knee’s healed.'”Ansari said that Reeves did not “go to the hospital or anything” after injuring his kneecap.“He’s done those ‘Wick’ movies, all the ‘Matrix ‘ stuff.

‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ Rocks CinemaCon With Lupita Nyong’o, Deafening Action Footage and Apocalyptic New York City

Matt Donnelly Senior Film Writer For a film in the “Quiet Place” universe, the decibel level was near deafening at the film’s CinemaCon presentation on Thursday in Las Vegas. John Krasinski’s horror franchise is now in its third outing, the latest being a prequel of sorts starring Lupita Nyong’o and titled “A Quiet Place: Day One.” The film takes viewers back to the inciting incident, when faceless alien beasts invaded the planet and revealed an extreme sensitivity to sound — using it to track and find terrified humans and, well, kill them. Nyong’o and costar Joseph Quinn (breakout star of the last season of “Stranger Things”) teed up an extended version of a “Day One” trailer released earlier this year.

‘Gladiator 2’ Debuts Epic Trailer at CinemaCon: Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington Bring Bloodshed, Brutality Back to the Colosseum

Brent Lang Executive Editor There was something fitting about the setting. Paramount Pictures unveiled the first footage from “Gladiator II” on the stage of The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, a hotel that reimagines Ancient Rome in all its decadent splendor, albeit with a few more slot machines. Ridley Scott seems to be offering a bloodier version of that distant age, one that finds Paul Mescal enter the arena as a nobleman who has renounced his privilege.

Anna Paquin on her ‘A Bit of Light’ indie film character: ‘A level of rock-bottom she didn’t know existed yet’

“A Bit of Light.”Moyer, 54, directs Paquin, 41, in the indie movie, written by Rachel Callard and based on her eponymous stage play. It’s the second time that Moyer has directed Paquin in a big-screen movie following “The Parting Glass” (2018).He also directed her in episodes of “True Blood” when they co-starred on the HBO series as vampire Bill Compton and telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse from 2008-2014.“A Bit of Light” follows the journey of Ella (Paquin), an alcoholic mother living with her father (Ray Winstone) and dealing with self-loathing after losing her two daughters over her drinking — and the 13-year-old boy, Neil (Luca Hogan), who helps her see the “light” toward a better future.“Ella is at this excruciatingly mundane place after what she thinks is rock-bottom and realizes that the everday-ness of living with her choices and decisions is actually a level of rock-bottom she didn’t know existed yet,” Paquin told The Post.“Throughout the film we see her slightly coming out of her shell little by little … but she does a lot of things within her power to sabotage her own happiness.”Ella strikes up an unlikely friendship with the wise-beyond-his-years Neil, who she meets in the park where she used to take her daughters — and where she frequently goes to brood over her plight.Neil is an odd duck who speaks on an adult level (he addresses Ella’s father, Alan, by his first name) and appears to be friendless. He talks about his parents and older brother (who we never meet) but he always has time to materialize in Ella’s life (and the lives of other characters) at crucial junctures.“This strange, fabulous Neil is on a mission to help her put herself back together and get her life back on track,” Paquin said.
