Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter After much speculation, the Cannes Film Festival has officially revealed that “Furiosa” will world premiere on the Croisette in 2024. The prequel will screen out of competition on May 15 at the Grand Theatre Lumière at le Palais des Festivals.
The premiere comes nine years after director George Miller unveiled “Mad Max: Fury Road” at the festival in 2015. Following its Cannes debut, “Fury Road” became a critical and commercial hit and has been widely regarded as one of the greatest action films in history.
It scored $380.4 million at the worldwide box office and 10 Oscar nominations. (However, “Mad Max: Fury Road” cost more than $150 million, so it just barely turned a profit.) “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Imperator Furiosa, the role originated by Charlize Theron in “Fury Road,” and Chris Hemsworth as the villainous Warlord Dementus.
Set more than a decade before the events of the post-apocalyptic “Fury Road,” the story follows a young Furiosa as she is abducted from her home and endures many trials and tribulations to get back to the Green Place of Many Mothers. “The idea of this prequel has been with me for over a decade,” Miller said.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to return to the Festival de Cannes – along with Anya, Chris and Tom – to share ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.’ There is no better place than La Croisette to experience this film with audiences on the world stage.” Miller has twice been a jury member at Cannes before serving as president in 2016 for the 69th edition of the festival. In 2022, he presented “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba, out of competition.
