Streaming pay-TV bundle provider FuboTV closed 2022 with 1.445 million subscribers in North America and posted healthy numbers in many financial categories in the fourth quarter.
Despite those positives, shares in Fubo fell 17% on a heavier-than-normal start to the trading day after the company revealed $68.1 million in new fundraising. The at-the-market raise was announced in slightly unorthodox fashion, just prior to the Q&A portion of a quarterly earnings call with Wall Street analysts. The company affirmed its prior guidance that it will begin to report positive cash flow by 2025, saying the influx in financing would enable it to reach that goal.
The startup posted negative adjusted EBITDA of $75.4 million in the fourth quarter, about 3% more red ink than in the year-ago quarter, but revenue surged 38% to $319.3. On an annual basis, Fubo has now cleared two significant thresholds, passing $1 billion in total revenue and $100 million in advertising revenue.
In a conference call with analysts, CEO David Gandler said Fubo is bringing a “differentiated” service to market, especially in the sports arena. Founded in 2015 as a sports-centric offering, Fubo has since broadened out but has become an unusually receptive home for regional sports networks. With their business model under immense pressure, many RSNs — notably Diamond Sports Group — have been in protracted carriage impasses with streaming bundlers like YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV and Sling.
Asked about comparisons with YouTube TV, which last year said it has surpassed 5 million subscribers, Gandler said they are “two companies positioned to be sports-first.” YouTube recently closed a deal with the NFL to provide the Sunday Ticket package that had been with

Kate Aurthur editor Last month, when “Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong announced that the fourth season of the Emmy-winning HBO drama would be its last, the internet howled in despair. But Brian Cox — who’s played the ferocious mogul Logan Roy since the show’s 2018 premiere — applauds Armstrong’s decision. “He’s very disciplined in that way, and also he’s very British in that way,” says Cox, who is Scottish, and in conversation seems to mention birthplace to explain behavior. “The American inclination is to milk it for all it’s worth.” Not that Cox, 76, won’t feel the loss. “I’ll miss the cast, I’ll miss the atmosphere, I’ll miss the bonhomie,” he says, ticking off reasons during a recent Zoom interview from London. And Logan? “Logan, probably, I’ll miss a bit. But upward and onwards.”

Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor The living hell of concert ticket-buying loomed into the foreground again this week, but this time it was not millions clamoring for a limited number of Taylor Swift or Bruce Springsteen tickets but rather attempts by long-running British alternative band the Cure to avoid gouging fans for its forthcoming “Lost World” North American tour. While the group had managed to avoid such controversial policies as platinum packages and variable pricing, frontman/founder Robert Smith was appalled to see hefty service fees added to the cost of “Verified Fan” tickets, which are intended to protect fans by keeping tickets out of the hands of scalpers, for the tour.
