EXCLUSIVE: Ahead of his first narrative feature feature Frybread Face and Me‘s international premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, Billy Luther has taken on new agency reps at CAA.
World premiering to rave reviews at SXSW earlier this year, the film written, directed and exec produced by Luther watches as two adolescent Navajo cousins from different worlds bond during a summer herding sheep on their grandmother’s ranch in Arizona while learning more about their family’s past and themselves. Among its other EPs are Taika Waititi and Macro’s Charles D. King.
In his review of the film out of Austin, TX, Deadline’s Damon Wise praised it for its “compassion and its curiosity about the things that make us we who really are.” Added Wise, “There are a lot of films based on personal experience at this year’s SXSW, and Billy Luther’s narrative feature debut Frybread Face and Me is one of the few that actually makes you wish it could go on longer. Using his authentic experience as a rough map rather than a beat sheet, Luther hits on something very special here, exploring universal themes of childhood and family in ways that transcend the specificity of its setting.”
Prior to Frybread Face and Me, Luther staffed on the past two seasons of AMC’s Native crime series Dark Winds, also helming a Season 2 episode. He began his career directing documentary features, including the award-winning Sundance titles Miss Navajo and Grab, and continues to be represented by Tantrum Management and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
