French VFX firm The Yard, whose credits include Indiana Jones 5, Ford v Ferrari, Enola Holmes 2, Wanda Vision, John Wick 4 and upcoming spin-off A Quiet Place: Day One, has appointed Tom Fonvillars as head of its CG department.
Fonvillars will oversee graphic creation for films and series. Fonvillars has previously collaborated with companies including The Mill and Framestore in London and Montreal. His filmography includes Edge of Tomorrow, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Thor: Ragnarok, Alita: Battle Angel, Lady and the Tramp, Army of The Dead, and more recently, Rebel Moon.
Fonvillars’ appointment comes amid company expansion, including the opening of a second site in Montpellier as part of the French government’s investment program France 2030 La Grande Fabrique de l’Image.
Fonvillars said: “It’s a real pleasure for me to join The Yard. Upon my return to France, it was paramount for me to contribute my experience to a studio handling significant projects while maintaining a human scale. From my initial interactions with Laurens Ehrmann, the philosophy and ambition of The Yard impressed me. The showcased talent of the artists, coupled with the expertise of the Production and Supervision teams, has consistently resulted in the production of high-quality projects over the recent years, rightfully earning them industry recognition.”
The Yard was founded and is overseen by Laurens Ehrmann. Among series it has worked on are Netflix’s Notre Dame, which was winner of the 2023 Cesar for best visual effects.

At first sight, the film the French chose to represent them at the Oscars next year couldn’t be any more French. A chaste romantic drama starring Juliette Binoche as Eugénie, an unsung, genius-level private chef, The Taste of Things takes place in the kitchen at the sprawling rustic home of the famous restauranteur Dodin Bouffant (Benoît Magimel), and features every culinary delight known to mankind. Food is braised, broiled, blanched, poached and sautéed, in carefully curated banquets that can take anything up to a waistline-busting 24 hours. Needless to say, audiences at the Cannes film festival savored every bite.

As a recent new grandfather, Mads Mikkelsen couldn’t be happier, but he doesn’t smile much in his new movie. An earthy 18th-century period piece, The Promised Land sees the Dane play a hard-up veteran, Ludvig Kahlen, who is determined to turn the blasted heaths of Jutland into a thriving farmland. It’s a Western of sorts, which becomes noticeably clearer when Kahlen starts to cross swords with a competing local landowner, but, for Mikkelsen, it’s a subversive alpha male story of the kind he does so well, from the brutal Viking fantasy Valhalla Rising to the white-cold survival drama Arctic.
